How I Made My Own ADSB Exchange Clone In A Weekend

This is a work in progress!

Introduction

I've been promoting the hobby of ADS-B reception to the members of the Online Amateur Radio Community for a good 6 months now and quite a lot of people there do it, many of them for a number of years. We've had a great time optimising our systems and sharing useful tips for getting the most out of it. We also share news from the hobby, and one of the larger stories was - inevitably…

ADS-B Service List

This work-in-progress document will list all of the ADS-B services from around the internet (as well from the OARC tracker!) that you can feed data too. They all have advantages and disadvantages according to services provided, what you get for feeding, and your moral choices (as you'll see).

	* OARC Flight Tracker - Map of flights being tracked by OARC feeders - there's also the feed checker, MLAT sync/map pages, system graphs and stats, a list of TCAS-RAs, and a live log of emergency flights tracked by the service
	* Active trackers in OARC - Member list of people running flight trackers, with kit info and who they're feeding

Feeding HFDL data to the OARC Flight Tracker

We're now accepting HFDL data into the aggregator. This data will not be full of the information that ADS-B is. You'll get a position and a track, a hex and a callsign, and that's about it. Not even altitude. The update rate is quite slow - sometimes every 30 minutes or so. This technology is old and is being phased out in favour of higher data rate satellite transmissions. However, until we get more feeds in other countries or someone to do Satellit…

I've noticed something very strange recently during my time extracting signals from aircraft from out of the air. For those unaware aircraft are usually pinging away on multiple areas of the EM spectrum, and I receive in two of them. Firstly, 1090

UK Squawk List (WIP)

There are many sources for squawk codes in the UK on the internet, but a lot of them seem to be based on older lists/information. So, here's the most up-to-date list direct from the UK's Civil Aviation Authority documentation. We'll try and keep this up to date as the documentation is usually updated every month, but actual changes will be rare. Anchor links are provided in the dropdown menu to each block section.
