-In this talk Simon will take you through the various interesting things there are to hear in these lower bands and what equipment you'll need to hear them (you probably have most of the equipment at home already.) As well as amateur radio he'll also touch on natural signals like spherics, whistlers and the dawn chorus, as well as submarine stations, navigational beacons, timesignals and the heavy metal station that is SAQ.

 | 3rd Oct 2026 | Dave "Hibby" Hibberd MM0RFN | Free Software in Ham Radio | An introduction to free and open source software in amateur radio. I'll start with how I got drawn into the DIY, tinkering side of the hobby — running Linux and BSD on my computer to support my radio work, rather than closed, proprietary alternatives. I'll then cover the why of free software for hams: the philosophy, the freedom to inspect and modify what runs on your machine, and the community of contributors behind it. I'll look at the practical side: the tools and software available to you, how you can get involved and contribute yourself, and the fun of learning by doing. I'll talk about my own work within the Debian project and Hibbian, the Debian-based distribution I build and maintain for radio and hacker use, with a live boot demonstration on the day. Finally, I'll share a few of the projects and moments from my own journey into free software and amateur radio that have kept me hooked. |
