talk:codeofconduct

I suggested that this needs to be more declarative. It should be a clear set or rules that must be abided by; and there should be consequences from non-compliance. The following is my first attempt to modify some of the language.

Proposed OARC Code of Conduct

This has not been accepted and is only a proposal.

Preamble

We aim to be a busy, productive, happy, innovative and agile community that can learn and innovate together, we welcome new ideas across the broad spectrum of the field of communications. We should always endeavour to foster good relationships and collaboration between groups with very different needs, interests and skills.

We gain strength from diversity and welcome participation from those who embrace it. This code of conduct exists to ensure that diverse groups collaborate to gain mutual advantage and enjoyment. We will challenge any prejudice that could jeopardise the participation of any person in the this group, the OARC.

The Code of Conduct governs how we behave in public and in private whenever we will be judged by our actions whilst acting as a member of the OARC group. We require it to be honoured by everyone who joins the community.

Expected behaviour

Be considerate

Understand the diverse gatherings with the OARC and make allowance for the potential for misunderstanding due to the nature of the on-line text-based chat system that Discord uses.

Be respectful

Disagreement is no excuse for poor manners. Work collaboratively to resolve conflict, assume good intentions and do your best to act in an empathic fashion. Do not allow frustration to turn into a personal attack as community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one.

Take responsibility for your words and actions

We can all make mistakes; when we do, we expect members to take responsibility for them. If someone perceives themself to have been harmed or offended, listen carefully and respectfully, and work to right any wrong.

Value decisiveness, clarity and consensus

Disagreements, social and technical, are normal, but do not allow them to persist and fester, leaving others uncertain of the agreed direction. Resolve disagreements constructively.

Ask for help when you are unsure

The collective knowledge within this community should enable everyone to receive help, be that technical, procedural or scientific. Just ask.

Step down considerately

If your time within a project, or the community reduces or ends, please try to do so in a way that minimises disruption to the community. Announce your planned withdrawal and take the proper steps to ensure that others can pick up where you left off.

Exercise leadership, assume authority and take responsibility

We can all lead by example, in debate and action. All community members should feel empowered to lead, take action, and experiment when they feel innovation could improve the OARC and our participation within the communications area. Exercise Leadership simply by taking action, there is no need to wait for recognition when the opportunity to lead presents itself.

Guidance and Oversight

Our online community, including the Discord server and website, is administratively managed by staff. While staff oversee these spaces, members are encouraged to self-regulate using this Code of Conduct.

Should it be needed, details on contacting staff will be clarified as part of an ongoing reorganisation to improve communication. Thank you for your patience as we work to enhance the process.

Unacceptable behavior

The following behaviors are considered harassment and are unacceptable within our community:

  • Violence, threats of violence or violent language directed against another person or people.
  • Posting or displaying sexually explicit or violent material.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or otherwise (including neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, religion, etc) discriminatory jokes, language or imagery.
  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment.
  • Deliberate misgendering or use of ‘dead’ or rejected names.
  • Posting/publishing or threatening to post/publish other people’s personally identifying information (“doxing”) whether physical or electronic.
  • Personal or political attacks (including insulting or derogatory comments); particularly those related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or disability.
  • The use of sexualised language or imagery and unwelcome sexual attention or advances; this includes sexualised comments or jokes, inappropriate touching and/or groping, gratuitous or off-topic sexual behaviour or descriptions of behaviours.
  • Simulated physical contact (e.g. textual descriptions like “hug” or “backrub”) without consent or after a request to stop.
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following (online or in person).
  • Sustained disruption of discussion.
  • Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease.
  • Publication of non-harassing private communication.
  • Trolling: disrupting the chat, making a nuisance out of yourself, deliberately making others uncomfortable, or otherwise attempting to start trouble.
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
  • Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting.

This list is not exhaustive.

Status of this Code of Conduct

This Code is not exhaustive or complete, but it does distil our current understanding of how to behave in a collaborative, shared environment.

Compliance

We expect this Code of Conduct to be followed in spirit as much as to the letter.

Reporting perceived non-Compliance

Any member can flag perceived non-compliance with this Code of Conduct by <to be defined>.

<statement on how reported non-compliance will be dealt with, and by whom>

Consequences of continued non-Compliance

Continued failure to abide by this Code of Conduct may result in expulsion from OARC.

Below is a simplified English version of the current code of conduct page. This is a potential replacement if we are keeping it short like the existing page

We aim to be a friendly, active, and creative community where people can learn, share, and grow. We welcome new ideas and encourage collaboration between groups with different skills and interests.

Our Code of Conduct helps us work together respectfully and responsibly. It applies to how we behave in public and private as members of OARC, and we expect everyone to follow it in both spirit and practice.

Community Values:

  • Be kind. Respect other opinions and avoid misunderstandings, especially in text-based chats. Be patient and polite.
  • Be respectful. Treat others with courtesy. Aggression or personal attacks aren’t acceptable, and we aim to keep this a safe and welcoming space.
  • Take responsibility. If you make a mistake or upset someone, apologise and work to make things right. Avoid swearing or negative language—it only makes things worse.
  • Ask for help. The community is here to support you. Whether it’s technical advice or general questions, please reach out.
  • Step down gracefully. If you need to leave a project or reduce your involvement, please let the group know and make sure others can continue the work.
  • Take the initiative. Leadership comes from action. If you have an idea or see something that could improve OARC, go for it! You don’t need permission to make a difference.

How We Work

Staff manage the Discord server and website, but members are encouraged to self-regulate using this Code of Conduct. If you need help from staff, any of the activity leads, training team or community representatives will share information on how to contact staff while we improve our communication processes. We appreciate your understanding as we make these updates. Our Commitment This Code isn’t exhaustive but reflects our shared values and goals. Following it can create a positive, inclusive, and productive community for everyone.

Below is the simplified English version of the text at the top of this talk page. Again, this is only a potential option.
