-====== Quansheng UV-K5 13.8V DC Charger Conversion ======+====== Quansheng UV-K5 13.8 V DC Charger Conversion ======

-===== Why? =====+The standard mains charger supplied with the Quansheng UV-K5 has been reported to generate significant radio-frequency interference (RFI). Although the transceiver supports USB-C charging, this method is comparatively slow and  does not charge the battery beyond approximately 80 % of its nominal capacity.

-The supplied mains charger produces lot of RFI, and is considered bit sketchy by some people.+Converting the charger base to operate from regulated 13.8 V DC supply mitigates these issues and allows the charger to be powered directly from typical amateur radio station power supply.

-===== How? =====+===== Method =====

-Using cheap TP5100 lithium battery charging module and a new common anode red / green LED (the original one is common cathode). The module can be switch to 8.4v 2S charging mode by shorting the pads marked 'set'. Construction is straightforward and should be fairly clear from the image below. I hot glued the module to the inside of the base.+The conversion utilises low-cost TP5100 lithium battery charging module and a replacement bi-colour red/green LED with a common-anode configuration. The original indicator LED supplied with the charger is common-cathode and therefore incompatible with the TP5100 module.
 +
 +The TP5100 module is configured for 8.4 V (2-cell, 2Scharging by shorting the pads marked “SET” on the module. Construction is straightforward and should be clear from the image below. The module was secured inside the charger base using hot-melt glue.
